KL claim charity shield after 2-1 win over Brunei

KUALA LUMPUR April 15 _ Kuala Lumpur won the Charity Shield tonight following a first-minute goal in extra time by national striker Nizaruddin Yusof, giving the city boys a 2-1 victory over Brunei.

The match at the KLFA Stadium tonight. went into extra time after both teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The extra time play was necessary to decide the winner of the Charity Shield for the league's new season.

For the league match, the 1-1 draw during regulation time is regarded the final score.

Brunei opened accounts in the 9th minute through Riwandi Wahit and Kuala Lumpur replied through M.Eswaran in the 87th minute before Nizaruddin made it 2-1.

Overall, it was a balanced match with both teams having an equal share of the attacks. But Brunei were the more dangerous side and they came close to several times.

The 1999 Malaysia Cup champion went on the onslaught right from the start but were denied goals due to poor finishing.

They came close to scoring in the 3rd minute but Kuala Lumpur goalie Shaharuddin Ahmad was in his element to check Riwandi's 10-metre drive.

Brunei kept on the pressure which finally paid-off handsomely in the 9th minute. This time Riwandi fully utilised his chance after receiving a cross from Abang Norsillmy Taha.

The match then became more exciting with both teams launching dangerous attacks. Kuala Lumpur, the 1999 FA Cup champion, began playing in an organised manner and often recahed their opponents' goal area but found Brunei's goalie Jefry Mohammad a stumbling block.

The homesters almost found an equaliser in the 38th minute off a free kick by Rosle Derus but his shot hit the goal post.

The second half was a different story. The city team dominated the match but their attempts were easily checked by Brunei.

In search for an equaliser, Kuala Lumpur redoubled their efforts with Nizaruddin having a few closed calls but Jefry played an active role to keep his goalmouth shut.

However, the on-form Brunei goalie was beaten in the 87th minute. From a corner kick by Shawal Johadi, Eswaran easily headed home for the equaliser.

The match then continued into extra time -- and just a minute after the game started, Kuala Lumpur sealed the winner. Nizaruddin put his name in the score sheet by heading home Shawal Johadi's cross.

Penang managed to force a 1-1 draw with Negeri Sembilan 1-1 in a Premier One match at the City Stadium in Penang tonight.

The islanders were forced to struggle in order to subdue a fighting Negeri Sembilan side. However R.Suresh Kumar managed to stab the ball home from a defence splitting pass from Wong Kah Loon after 30 minutes.

Seeking the equaliser, Negeri Sembilan bombarded the Penang goal and managed to score through Leong Hong Seng five minutes from time.

Both sides were reduced to 10-men after Penang skipper Chee Wan Hoe and Negeri Sembilan's Mohamad Fairuz Saleh were red-carded for rough play.

Terengganu made full use of their chances to score a convincing 3-2 win over a tough Perak side in a Premier One match at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium here .

Terengganu who crushed Pahang 3-0 in a FA Cup clash on Tuesday played a neat game to check Perak in their stride.

The Turtle squad did not take long to settle down and scored in the 24th minute from a spot kick.

Rosdi Talib scored from the rebound after Ghani Malik thundered the penalty kick against the crossbar.

Former Melaka player Halim Jantan added another for the home side three minutes after the breather, off a goalmouth scramble. Perak staged a fightback and reduced the deficit seven minutes later through a Mohd Nor Derus grounder.

The goal jolted the Terengganu players into action and in the 62nd minute, Hairuddin Omar headed home off a Rosdi Talib corner.

Three minutes before the final whistle, Perak scored their second goal through Liew Kit Kong who managed to beat the Terengganu offside trap.

In Kota Kinabalu, a second half goal by Rosdee Sulong saved Sabah from the blushes to earn a hard fought 1-1 draw with Sarawak in their Premier One opening match at Likas Stadium, here tonight.

The former international took advantage of a weak back pass by defender Dahlan Matusin in the 57th minute to deliver a low shot past Sarawak goalkeeper Mazlan Wahed to level the score.

Sabah turned up pressure after this but the visitors' solid defence thwarted their efforts.

Sarawak, last year's Malaysia Cup runners-up, lived up to their mark when they took the lead in the 16th minute through Mohd Ali Sapiee.

The versatile midfielder gave his team a great start, beating two Sabah defender as he blasted a dipping shot from 30 metres, beyond the reach of Sabah's debutant goalkeeper Mark Danum.

Sarawak's frontline comprising Ramles Sari and Affendi Julaihi had each the chance to score before the breather but failed to find the net.

Sarawak, who put on a defensive game throughout the pulsating encounter, managed to hold on to their lead before the breather.

Perlis came from two goals behind to force a 2-2 draw with Selangor in a Premier One league encounter at the Shah Alam Stadium here tonight.

However, it was not a good start for the homesters who were promoted from Premier Two this season when they had a clear chance to gain full points after leading by two goals in early stages of the match.

It was Perlis who came closed in the 5th minute through former Pulau Pinang striker G.Shanmugam but his header off a corner kick from V.Yogeswaran was well saved by Selangor 'keeper Azmin Azram Abdul Aziz.

Selangor who started without injured national player Zami Mohd Noor were struggling early in the match compared to the visitors who were better organised.

In the 17th minute, Perlis who were also promoted to Premier One this season, nearly got their first goal through Manzoor Azwira Abdul Wahid who had only Azmin to beat, but his shot went just inches wide.

Selangor's best chance was from Mohd Rizal Hassan in the 20th minute but his shot after receiving Rusdi Suparman's passed was blocked by Perlis goalkeeper Rozman Hussin for a fruitless corner.

After several closed calls, Selangor finally found the net in the 33rd minute through Jaafar Saleh whose shot beat Perlis keeper Rozman.

Selangor increased the lead two minutes later through Nazzab Hidzan's 20m freekick, beating a hapless Rozman after Rusdi Suparman was floored outside the penalty box.

Despite down with two goals, Perlis did not showed any signed of panic and their effort paid off a minute before the interval through Paidiya Rau's curling shot which thundered past Azmin.

After the breather, the game turned into an exciting clash with both teams exchanging attempts and in the 58th minute, Perlis got the equaliser when Shanmugam headed home the team's second goal off a rebound from Muhamad Khaironnisam Sahabudin'a attempt.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, Johor came out strongly after the breather and were two up in the 70th minute.

Again it was Azmil who got his name into the scoresheet when he fired home a 30-metre grounder that Pahang's keeper Zuraimi Hassan failed to stop.

The goal number two took a demoralizing effect on the visitors and the shaky Pahang backline conceded the third goal in the 87th minute. Meor Shamsul Kamal sent a perfect lob into the Pahang goalmouth for Mohd Nazreen to hit home.

Pahang pulled a consolation goal in the 90th minute through Shahrin Majid but by then they were well beaten. _ Bernama
