Indonesia Book Last Semifinals Spot In Uber Cup

KUALA LUMPUR May 15 - Indonesia became the last team to qualify into the Uber Cup semifinals when they stunned hosts Malaysia 5-0 in Group A match at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here tonight.

Second singles Ellen Angelina delivered Indonesia's much needed point to reach the semifinals, when she beat Wong Miew Kheng in 45 minutes.

Indonesia, the 1998 Uber Cup runners-up, confirmed their place into the last four while Japan did not make it when they lost to Denmark 2-3 in another Group A match.

Lidya Djaelawijaya, who had never won both her matches earlier against Japan and Denmark, found her winning note when she upstaged Malaysia's top singles Ng Mee Fen 11-6, 11-9 to give the first point for Indonesia.

Indonesia first doubles pair of Eliza Nathanael-Deyana Lomban then widened the team's lead to 2-0 after outclassing Lim Pek Siah-Joanna Quay 15-2, 15-11.

In a tense and anxious moment, Ellen played cool to beat Miew Kheng in straight set. Ellen won the first set 11-5. But, in the second set, Miew Kheng controlled the game with her well dropcourt.

At one stage, Miew Kheng looked good to take on the second set after leading Ellen by 9-6. But, Miew Kheng lost her rhythm to easily give her Indonesia counterpart four points before getting a deuce. But Miew Kheng well performance ended when she lost 10-13 to Ellen.

Indonesia second doubles Etty Tantri-Cynthia Tuwankotta extended the lead to 4-0 when she outdid Ang Li Peng-Chor Hooi Yee 15-3, 15-9.

Yuli Marfuah sealed Indonesia's clean victory when she upstaged Wong Pei Tty 6-11, 11-5, 11-1.

Meanwhile, second seeded team Denmark kept their winning streak in the competition here when they defeated Japan 3-2 to top Group A.

Denmark will meet Group B runners-up South Korea while defending champion Group B leader China will take on Indonesia who finished second in Group A in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The match between South Korea and Denmark will be played at 1330 hours and China against Indonesia at 1830 hours.

World number one Camilla Martin easily tamed Yasuko Mizui 11-3, 11-1 in 20 minutes before Helene Kirkegaard-Rikke Olsen made it 2-0 up for Denmark by beating Yoshiko Iwata-Haruko Matsuda 15-7, 15-3.

Mette Sorensen assured Denmark's victory after getting pass Takako Ida 11-3, 11-1.

However, the Danish side dropped the next two matches when second doubles Majken Vange-Pernille Harder lost to Chikako Nakayama-Naomi Murakami 15-8, 4-15, 14-17.

Denmark third singles Mette Pedersen then went down to Miho Tanaka 7-11, 10-13.
