8th Sukma Ends Without Outstanding Achievement

PENANG June 4 - The 8th edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) ended here last night, however it failed to produce any athlete of quality.

There were no names that could be touted as promising athletes in all the 29 events put up.

It was apparent that the meet this time was dominated by the same national athletes who had represented the country at international competitions previously.

The presence of these elites clearly overshadowed the new athletes who tried to prove their capability in the biggest sports meet in the country.

Major sports such as athletics, swimming, tenpin bowling, badminton, and gymnastics continued to be dominated by the country's elite athletes.

They did not face much competition - if there were any, the competition would only be among the elites which had been expected from the start.

Such a situation did not provide encouragement to the athletes to put up their best performance as there was not much competition.

This lack of competition was also seen in events such as shooting and archery where the Gemilang Project athletes, as expected, had the upper hand.

While the 10-day games saw 55 Sukma and seven national records being improved, they were nothing to shout about as they were nowhere near the SEA Games or Asian Games record.

While the performance of the athletes were being questioned at the games, external problems such as the ineffectiveness of the information technology, the rescheduling of certain events and the chaotic situation at the media centre had affected the smooth running of the games.

It cannot be denied that the 8th Sukma can be considered as among the best especially with the sophisticated facilities at the sports complexes, but the lackadaisical attitude of the officials entrusted to ensure its success had tarnished the games.

In addition, the lack of professionalism among officials in the information technology division to convey changes or the latest results of a competition had compounded the problems.

Personnel at the media centre who were not sensitive to information that they received had contributed to the problems faced by pressmen and what was most regrettable was that the presence of the media representatives who were assigned to cover the event was said to be annoying - an allegation which had never been made before.

Although the Centre was equipped with the Intranet and Internet systems, the two facilities were completely useless as the information provided were limited and not updated.

Despite the shortcomings, hosts Penang still deserved praise especially for the keen interest shown by Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon was was deeply concerned about the problems and difficulties faced by everyone involved in the games.

The 8th Sukma can be used as a platform to improve whatever weaknesses there were within the various organisations, especially the attitude of the state sports associations including the Penang State Sports Council which was apparent throughout the duration of the games.

After the conclusion of all events yesterday, Selangor emerged as champions with a medal tally of 53 golds, 56 silvers and 54 bronzes while Sarawak and Perak ended second and third respectively.

Sarawak collected 49 gold, 55 silver, 56 bronze medals while Perak had 46 golds, 37 silvers and 40 bronzes. Hosts Penang finished fourth with 34 gold, 26 silver and 36 bronze medals.

Sabah will host the 9th Sukma in the year 2002.
