Putrajaya chronology of major events

KUALA LUMPUR Nov 7 - The signing of an agreement today making Putrajaya a Federal Territory marks another milestone in its development.

Following is the chronology of Putrajaya's development as it evolves into a federal territory, making it the third in the country after Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.

Mid 1980's : The idea of establishing Malaysia's first Federal Government administrative centre away from Kuala Lumpur was mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Various sites were identified and five were shortlisted.

June 2, 1993 : Cabinet approved Prang Besar, in Sepang, as the site for the development of the Federal Government's new administrative centre.

Dec, 1993 : Government appointed six local consultants together with the Town and Country Planning Department and the Public Works Department to prepare the development plan for the Federal Government's new administrative centre.

Feb 22, 1994: The Federal Government's new administrative centre masterplan was approved by Cabinet.

Oct 12, 1994: The Cabinet decided to change the name Prang Besar to Putrajaya in honour of Malaysia's first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

July 20, 1995: An agreement was reached to allow the Federal Government to preside over any functions of the Selangor State Government in relation to Putrajaya, including the setting up of a body to administer and manage Putrajaya on behalf of the Federal Government.

Oct 19, 1995: Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd was officially incorporated. The company would act as the project developer and financier.

March 1, 1996: Perbadanan Putrajaya was formed by an Act of Parliament. The body was empowered to carry out all executive decisions related to Putrajaya on behalf of the Federal Government, and to act as the local authority upon the project's completion.

Sept 10, 1996: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad performed the ground breaking ceremony for Putrajaya's Government Precinct.

Oct, 1997: Putrajaya was officially launched as a city by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).

May 31, 1999: The National Security Division and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), both agencies being under the Prime Minister's Department, created history by becoming the first government agencies to start operation in the Prime Minister's Office Complex.

June 1, 1999: Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali started duty at his office in the Prime Minister's Office Complex.

June 18, 1999: A congregation of 1,000 people performed the first Friday prayers at Masjid Putra which can accommodate a congregation of 15,000.

June 21, 1999: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad started duty officially at his new office in Putrajaya.

June 23, 1999: The first Cabinet meeting was held at the Putrajaya Federal Government Administrative Centre chaired by the Prime Minister.

July 6, 1999: Masjid Putra, Taman Wetland and Dataran Putra were opened to the public including local and foreign tourists from 9am to 5pm every day.

July 13, 1999: The 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Siti Aishah paid a visit to Putrajaya.

Oct 19, 2000: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced that the Cabinet had agreed to turn Putrajaya into a Federal Territory.

Oct 23, 2000: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed that the proposal to turn Putrajaya into a Federal Territory did not involve Cyberjaya and the KL International Airport (KLIA).

Nov 7, 2000: The agreement making Putrajaya as a Federal Territory was signed by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah on behalf of the Federal Government while the Selangor state government was represented by the Regent of Selangor Raja Idris Shah.
