Chua crowned National GP champion

JAMES Chua (L) and Ong Ewe Hock with their winning cheques after the National Grand Prix's men singles final at Bukit Kiara, Jan 27.

KUALA LUMPUR Jan 27 - Sarawak's James Chua overwhelmed veteran shuttler Ong Ewe Hock to win the men's singles crown in the National Grand Prix Finals held at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara here today.

Chua, 23, who won the Melaka, Kelantan and Penang Open championships last year, outplayed Ewe Hock 7-5, 7-4, 4-7, 7-0 in 44 minutes.

Right from the start, Ewe Hock was clearly troubled by Chua's fast attacking play. Despite winning the third game, Ewe Hock came to a dead end and failed to neutralise Chua's splendid performance.

Chua did not give the Penang-born Ewe Hock much room to manoeuvre and the 2001 Malaysian Open champion was rattled by his opponent's lightning moves.

After winning the first two games 7-5, 7-4, Chua relaxed his grip and this was capitalised by Ewe Hock to win the third, 7-4.

In the fourth game, Ewe Hock appeared to be in total collapse, making numerous unforced errors like sending the shuttlecock into the net or out of play.

Taking advantage of Ewe Hock's erratic show, Chua romped home to win 7-0, needing only two service changes in the game.

"I am proud to win the national (grand prix) title for the first time in my career. I hope the coach allows me more opportunities to play in international tournaments in the future," said the Kuching-born player who won the gold medal in the 1998 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor.

Chua said despite creating an impact in the domestic badminton circuit, he needs more international exposure as without it he will not be able to go far in international championships.

Last year, Chua's best performance abroad was reaching the last eight at the Indonesian and Thailand Opens.

Today's triumph earned Chua RM7,000 cash prize with Ewe Hock receiving RM3,600.

In the men's doubles, the pair of Chang Kim Wai/Hong Chieng Hun who shocked national top pair of Chan Chong Ming/Chew Choon Eng in the semifinals last night, emerged champions after beating Jeremy Gan/Ng Kean Kok 8-7, 7-1, 7-5.

Kim Wai-Chieng Hun shared the RM11,000 cash prize for their winning effort with Gan-Kean Kok receiving RM6,000.

Meanwhile Lee Yin Yin of Penang retained the women's crown after defeating Wong Miew Choo 7-3, 7-0, 7-1. Yin Yin received RM4,000 with Miew Choo getting RM2,000.

National doubles player Lim Pek Siah won two titles today. She teamed up with Chong Ming to beat Zakry Latif/Chin Eei Hui 8-6, 7-2, 3-7, 4-7, 7-4 to win the mixed doubles title.

In the women's doubles, Pek Siah and Ang Li Peng battled Norhashikin Amin/Wong Pei Tty before winning 4-7, 7-2, 4-7, 7-1, 8-6.
