Ops Nyah II launched to achieve "zero immigrant" target

KOTA KINABALU Feb 26 - The Sabah police, in collaboration with the military forces and various agencies, simultaneously launched "Ops Nyah II" in 13 districts today to rid the state of illegal immigrants and squatter houses.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Yusoff said that up to 10am police had arrested 1,225 illegal immigrants in Tawau and Sandakan alone.

"The first step in the operation is to detect, arrest and chase away all illegal immigrants. All district police chiefs have set a target of zero immigrant in their respective districts and the are committed to achieving the objective," he told a news conference here.

The next step was to demolish the squatter houses occupied by the immigrants, he said, adding that the police and military would be deployed to former squatter sites to ensure that no one tried to rebuild houses in these areas.

Present was Division 1 Commander Mej-Jen Datuk Pahlawan Mohamad Azumi Mohamed and Fifth Infrantry Brigade Commander Muhamad Yasin Yahya.

Ramli said the operation would focus on five areas with predominantly squatter settlements, namely:

* Kampung Pondo, Pulau Gaya, Kota Kinabalu (1,014 houses and 5,201 residents)

* Kampung BDC, Tawau (1,000 houses, 8,000 residents)

* Kampung Muslim, Labuan (1,937 houses, 7,000 residents)

* Kampung Bakau, Lahad Datu (1,300 houses, 3,000 residents) and

* Kampung Tanjung Kapor, Kudat (650 houses, 3,650 residents).

To facilitate legal action, the photograph and fingerprints of every illegal immigrant would be recorded and those who returned after being chased out would be charged under the Immigration Act, he said.

He said that getting rid of illegal immigrants and squatters would directly help to reduce the crime rate in the state and cripple drug trafficking syndicates in the squatter areas.

Of the 18,888 criminal cases reported in the last three years, 4,546 involved illegal immigrants, he added.
