French action star Jean Reno gets top honour from Chirac

PARIS Dec 16 - French actor Jean Reno, famous for tough-guy roles at home and in the United States, was Monday awarded a high honour by President Jacques Chirac.

``He is one of those very great actors who is connected by an invisible thread, a complicity, a friendship, to the public,'' Chirac said as he made Reno, 55, an officer of the National Order of Merit, the second-highest level of civilian award after the Legion d'Honneur.

Born in Morocco to Spanish parents before moving to Paris at age 17, Reno is one of France's top stars.

Abroad he is perhaps best-known for ``The Big Blue'', ``Nikita'', ``Leon'' (also known as ``The Professional''), ``Mission: Impossible'' and the 1998 remake of ``Godzilla''.

In France, he is popular for his deft mix of action and humour in movies such as ``The Visitors'', ``Wasabi'' and, most recently, ``Ruby and Quentin''.

During the ceremony, Chirac also made an Arab French director, Yamina Benguigui, a knight of the Legion d'Honneur and bestowed other honours on serving and former members of French institutions and organisations. - AFP
