Chong Wei to face Tsuen Seng in the semis

SEREMBAN Jan 9 - Four of the expected semifinalists will battle each other in the men's singles Saturday after defeating their respective opponents in the Proton-Eon National Grand Prix Badminton Finals 2003 at the Negeri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club (NSCRC), here Friday night.

As most of the crowds want to see an exciting battle between defending champion Lee Chong Wei and the only senior in the RM84,000 tournament, Lee Tsuen Seng in the finals, both these national shuttlers have to prove their prowess in the semifinals.

Chong Wei outclassed Ramesh Nathan 15-1, 15-3 in 16 minutes to lead Group A while Tsuen Seng topped the Group B when he trounced Ismail Saman 15-1, 15-5 in 15 minutes.

"It will be a tough fight tomorrow evening. We've only met once during the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Elite Challenge last July.

"I won that game in the rubber set but Chong Wei's performance has improved since then. He's physically younger than I but I'm an experienced shuttler," Tsuen Seng told reporters after the game Friday night.

Meanwhile in the other games, Bahrain Satellite champion Kuan Beng Hong will do battle with Indian Satellite champion Yeoh Kay Bin after they had defeated their respective opponents Friday night.

Beng Hong had an easy semifinal when Allan Tai gave him a walkover to top the Group C while Yeoh Kay Bin defeated K.Yogendran 15-11, 15-4 to lead Group D.

"I lost three times to Kay Bin last season. First in the Malaysian Open last July, then in the Indian Satellite and Bahrain Satellite, both in October," said Beng Hong who celebrated his 21st birthday, Friday.

In the Men's doubles, SEA Games silver medallist Chew Choon Eng/Chang Kim Wai topped the Group E when they beat Lok Chong Hong/Ong Soon Chiang in straight sets 15-5, 15-7.

Earlier, the pair of Koo Kien Keat/Gan Teik Chai led the Group F when they defeated Lin Woon Fui/Hong Chieng Hin 15-10, 15-2.

In the semifinals Saturday, Choon Eng/Kim Wai will meet Woon Fui/Chieng Hin while Kien Keat/Teik Chai will face Ng Kean Kok/Ong Ewe Hock.

In the Women's doubles, the country's number one pair Chin Eei Hui/Wong Pei Tty will square off with Ooi Sock Ai/Mooi Hing Yau while Julia Wong Pei Xian/Haw Chiou Hwee will meet Law Pei Pei/Joanne Quay.

In the mixed doubles, Gan Teik Chai/Fong Chew Yen will meet Mohd Fairuzizuan Tazari/Ooi Sock Ai while Koo Kien Keat/Chin Eei Hui will face Mohd Zakry Latif/Joanne Quay.
