MRSM-YT in Besut to be reopened on June 4

BESUT April 2 - Terengganu will reopen the Mara Junior Science College-Terengganu Foundation (MRSM-YT) in Besut which was closed by the former Pas government, this June 4.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Idris Jusoh said a total of 100 Form One students and 100 Form Four students would be enrolled for the first academic session.

"The enrollment would be based on criterias set by MRSM while teachers would be assigned by Mara.

"Offer letters which would be jointly issued MRSM and YT is testimony that we have kept our promise to reopen the college," he told reporters after a meet-the-people gathering in Kampung Lak Kok here Friday.

Idris said this when asked to comment on the latest development on the reopening of MRSM-YT in Besut and MRSM-YT in Dungun which were closed by Pas when they were in power.

Apart from reopening the two MRSM-YTs, Barisan Nasional (BN) in its supplementary manifesto for the 11th General Election, also pledged to build two new MRSMs in Terengganu.

Meanwhile, Idris said students of Kolej Sains dan Tahfiz Al-Quran (Kostaq) which were currently occupying the former MRSM-YT building in Besut, would be merged with students of Kostaq in Dungun.

Kostaq was established by Pas to replace MRSM-YT during their reign in the state.

Idris said only qualified teachers would be allowed to be the academic staff of Kostaq in Dungun as there were currenly unqualified teachers at the college.

"Kostaq students would continue with their studies like normal at the Dungun campus and the process (of reopening MRSM YT Besut) would not affect them at all.

"The State government will make sure their wellbeing is taken care of," he said.

EARLIER, in JERTIH, Idris said that all mosque construction projects which were abandoned during Pas' more than four years' rule in Terengganu will be revived.

He said the halt to the construction had inconvenienced the residents who needed new mosques in their areas to cater to the increasing congregation.

"As such, the government has decided to complete the abandoned mosques, including those in Dungun, Penarik in Setiu and Kampung Balik Bukit, Jertih, because it feels duty-bound to the residents who want more comfort when worshipping," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after joining the residents in cleaning the Seberang Jertih mosque during the launch of the mosque gotong-royong programme.

Idris said mosques should be given priority as houses of worship and it was the responsibility of everyone to preserve and prosper the mosques.

He said that by holding gotong royong involving everyone, including the youth, to clean up the mosques, it would indirectly inculcate unity and a love for mosques among the residents.
