Selangor Sultan suspends "datuk" title of six persons

SHAH ALAM Oct 19 - The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Tuesday suspended the "datuk" title conferred on six persons who are facing trial.

The title would be withdrawn if they are convicted but would be automatically restored if they are acquitted, Selangor State Secretary Datuk Mohd Adzib Isa told a press conference when conveying the sultan's order.

The six persons are former managing director of Perwaja Steel Sdn Bhd Tan Sri Eric Chia Eng Hock; former Selangor executive councillor and state assemblyman Datuk Saidin Thamby; former dean of the Sports Science and Recreation Faculty of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Datuk Mohd Saberi Salleh; former senior general manager (investment) of the Pilgrims Management and Fund Board Datuk Mohamad Shafie; former Selangor executive councillor Datuk Mohd Shariff Jajang and Indonesian businessman Datuk Chow C. K. Kenneth alias A. Wira Tjakrawinata.

Chia received the Datuk Seri Indera Alam Diraja carrying the title "Datuk Diraja" in 1985, Saidin was bestowed the Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) carrying the title "Datuk" also in 1985, Mohd Saberi was honoured with the Datuk Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (DSSA) carrying the title "Datuk" in 1999, Mohamad was conferred the DSSA in 1999, Mohd Shariff was bestowed the DPMS in 1991 and the Setia-Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (SSA) in 1988 and Chow received the DPMS in 1999.

Chia is on trial for criminal breach of trust, Saidin for corruption, Mohd Saberi for verifying false invoices, Mohamad for cheating, Mohd Shariff for corruption and Chow for furnishing false information to the Securities Commission.

Mohd Adzib Isa said the suspension order was arrived at after Sultan Sharafudin had consulted with and obtained the advice of the Selangor Royal Council which met Tuesday.

"All of them cannot use the `datuk' title during the hearing in court. We seek to have the courts play their role in this matter. The media should also play its role by not using the title (with their names)," he said.

He said the suspension of the title did not involve the honours of other states and those bestowed by the Yang Di-pertuan Agong at federal level.

Mohd Adzib said that during the period of suspension, it was not necessary for the six persons to surrender the medal and honours conferred on them.

Asked how many people had been conferred the title "datuk" by Selangor, he said the palace was compiling the relevant data to create a special reference web site.

Also present at the press conference were the Secretary of the Selangor Royal Council Datuk Mohd Munir Bani and a member of the council, Tan Sri Mohd Azmi Kamaruddin.

Mohd Azmi said Sultan Sharafuddin ordered the suspension so as to uphold the grandeur of the honours conferred by Selangor and safeguard them from blemish.
