Plantations urged to pay more to attract local workers

KUCHING Oct 31 - Plantations in Sarawak should give better pay and fringe benefits to attract more local workers and reduce their dependency on foreigners, Sarawak Labour Council (SLC) president William Ghani Bina said Sunday.

He said locals were reluctant to work in land development ventures because of low salaries despite having the relevant qualification and skills.

It was not true that Sarawakians shunned the often back-breaking work in plantations given that most of them came from an agrarian background, he told Bernama.

Sarawak Land Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr James Masing said on Saturday there were vacancies for about 7,000 workers in the plantation sector and the shortage might hinder efforts to develop about one million hectares by 2010.

He also said the state government wanted the Indonesian illegal workers, estimated to number 100,000, to leave the state using the amnesty programme and return legally to work in the construction and plantation sectors.

William, who is also Sarawak CUEPECS chairman and Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president, welcomed the assurance given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that the proposed new pension scheme for civil servants would be more beneficial than the existing one.

"Anything that can improve and benefit the civil servants is very good and the government should continue to treat pensioners the same way as civil servants, especially during economic crises," he added.

Abdullah had said that the new scheme being worked out by the Public Services Department would help reduce the financial burden of the government without causing civil servants to lose out.

Under the new scheme, civil servants would be required to contribute to a retirement fund with the government matching their contribution.
