Consider people's wishes, interests in selecting candidate
BANGI Sept 13 — The selection of the candidate for the Bagan Pinang state seat by-election should take into consideration the people’s wishes and interests.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the chosen candidate must be able to serve the constituency and accepted by the people as they were the ones who would cast the votes.
“Other people can say what they want, but the ones who will cast the votes are the people in the constituency,” he told reporters after launching the new uniforms for the Civil Defence Department at the Malaysian Civil Defence Training Academy here today.
He was commenting on Teluk Kemang Umno’s decision to field former menteri besar Tan Sri Isa Abdul Samad as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Bagan Pinang by-election.
Earlier, Hishammdddin, who is also Home Minister, said stricter terms and conditions would be enforced in the selection of police volunteer reserves to ensure that they were really qualified.
He said 133 volunteers out of 249 who passed the security screening, were selected to join the team last month.
“Right now, the security screening is still on for another 1,122 candidates, of whom 948 are Rela members and 174 others are from the Civil Defence Department.”
Hishammuddin said the department was registered under the International Civil Defence Organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland to ensure that it was on par with such bodies in the developed countries.
