2011 SUKMA to be held on moderate scale - Ahmad Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR April 18 — The SUKMA games to be organised this year from June 2 to 12 will be held on a moderate scale, involving a cost of RM7 million compared with the RM100 million spent by states when hosting the event.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said this year”s SUKMA would only involve 19 sports, namely swimming (waterpolo, synchronized swimming), cycling (track), body building, hand ball, netball, basketball, futsal, beach volleyball, judo, kabaddi, canoe, cricket, fencing, rowing, table tennis, rugby, silambam, softball and tennis. "We will reduce expenses for “ceremonies” and concentrate on presentation of events...in line with the concept of not overspending for organizing sports event,” he said after chairing a SUKMA Supreme Council meeting here today.

He said he was happy with the preparation report for the games which would see participation from 3,640 athletes and 1,963 officials who would be placed at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

He added that though states had expressed concern over the additional expenses incurred due to the staging of the SUKMA games yearly, all states have agreed to send their athletes.

"The objective of organizing the SUKMA every year is to revive and encourage participation at every level and to keep athletes on their toes year in year out but it cannot be denied that states will face a challenge to adjust their budget to ensure their athletes participated every year,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery said the upgrading of venues and facilities, preparation of technical officials and volunteers for the SUKMA to be hosted by Pahang, was progressing smoothly.

"In Pahang, the overall cost is expected to be around RM150 million and involve participation from 9,000 athletes and officials,” he said.

Last May, the Cabinet Committee for Sports Development had decided that the biennial SUKMA games would be held yearly and alternated between states and Kuala Lumpur (home).

When hosted in Kuala Lumpur, compulsory sports like swimming, diving, badminton, football, gymnastics, hockey, athletics, squash, tenpin bowling, weightlifting, cycling, karate, lawn bowls, archery, shooting, sailing, silat, sepak takraw, taekwondo and wushu will not be held.

Ahmad Shabery said the 2014 SUKMA will be hosted by Perlis.
