SUKMA 2011 - an effort 'democratising' sports in the country

KUALA LUMPUR June 1 — The 14th Malaysia Games (Sukma) will kick off tomorrow by fielding 19 sport events categorised as non-optional sports at several locations around the Klang Valley.

If previously Sukma was held biennially, beginning from this year it will become an annual event and slotted into the nation”s sport calender.

The Malaysian Sports Council will be the organiser on each of the odd year involving non-optional sports while the states take turn to organise the games on even year involving only the compulsory sports.

MSC”s director of sports management division Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdullah felt that by organising Sukma each year would ”democratise” all the sports events, including the less popular sports.

"We not only concentrate on compulsory sports in view of several certain unpopular sports are also put into competition at SEA Games, Commonwelth Games or even Asian Games.

"There are times these non-optional sports give us opportunities to collect more medals at the respective games, therefore it”s appropriate that attention is also be given to the development of such sports,” he told Bernama today.

Events being offered for competition for this year”s Sukma are aquatics (water polo or rhythmic swimming), cycling (track), bodybuilding, handball, netball, basketball, futsal, beach volleyball, judo, kabaddi, canoeing, cricket, fencing, rowing, table-tennis, rugby, silambam, softball and tennis. The events in this year”s games to be held until June 12, will take place at 17 venues in the state”s capital, Bangi and Shah Alam.

Abdul Jalil said for this year”s edition, the MSC had decided only athletes below the age of 21, to be given the opportunity to take part in order to identify young potential talents to be developed to higher level.

Abdul Jalil said in order to maintain the quality of the competition, the organisers had decided only events having at least five participants from the states taking part would be offered for competition. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will officially open the Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Games at the Cheras Football Stadium on June 5 and the closing by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek at the MSC”s mini stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 12.

A total of 3,336 athletes and 1,456 officials including the coaches will be involced in the championship.
